This week features the spanish opera singer, Montserrat Caballé, the German Democratic Republic, Russia’s Kalibr-NK long-range cruise missile, the Eddystone Lighthouse, London’s Millennium Wheel, French Impressionist painters, and the exodus of migrants from Honduras.

October 6, 2018: Montserrat Caballé, Spanish opera singer, died aged 85. Barcelona, her famous duet with Freddie Mercury, became the anthem of the 1992 Olympics

October 7, 1949: The German Democratic Republic, commonly known as East Germany, with its capital in the Soviet sector of Berlin, was proclaimed

October 8, 2015: Russia’s Kalibr-NK long-range cruise missile made its combat debut, reaching targets in Syria from Russian warships in the Caspian Sea

October 9, 1759: The Eddystone Lighthouse, off England’s southwest coast, was completed. Modelled on the shape of an oak tree, it had a major influence on lighthouse design

October 10, 1999: London’s Millennium Wheel, at the time the world’s tallest Ferris wheel, was successfully raised into a vertical position on the south bank of the River Thames

October 11, 2004: An exhibition by 12 French Impressionist painters opened in Beijing, the first time China had shown such paintings on this scale. It attracted 300,000 visitors

October 12, 2018: An ever-growing migrant caravan set out from Honduras with hopes of reaching the U.S. By year end over 7,000 migrants were camped on the Mexico-U.S. border
