Political scenarios for Italy
August 21, 2019 - Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella is consulting with parliamentary groups to form a new coalition following the resignation of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. Mattarella’s consultations with party delegations will continue through Wednesday and Thursday.
The end of the 14-month-old coalition government presents Mattarella with a range of options. Scenarios include a snap election, the forming of a new coalition without holding a new vote, and the unlikely continuation of the current government.
According to opinion polls, the League could form a coalition with the far-right, anti-immigration Brothers of Italy, and Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right Forza Italia.
A bid by Salvini’s rivals to put aside differences could see a coalition between the Five Star Movement and the opposition centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
Some analysts have suggested a grand coalition between the Democratic Party, Forza Italia and Five Star Movement.
