Recent North Korean missile tests

By Duncan Mil

August 2, 2019 - North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast, the third such launch in just over a week. The tests are a likely reaction to planned military exercises between South Korea and the U.S.

The launches happened at 02:59 (17:59GMT Thursday) and 03:23 local time from the Yonghung area in South Hamgyong province into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The latest flights follow launches on July 25, and July 31. On June 30 the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to revive stalled talks at an impromptu meeting at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas.

The missiles tested, known by the intelligence community as KN-23s, resemble the Russian 9K723 Iskander-M. Based on the flight profiles of the July launches, the KN-23s are capable of aero-ballistic manoeuvres to increase their ability to evade missile defences.

The launches bring the number of test flights to nine since a summit between Trump and Kim collapsed on February 28.
