U.S. planning new naval base in Australia

By Mike Tyler

July 31, 2019 - The U.S. Navy is planning to build a military port in Australia once Congress gives approval for $211.5 million. Each year, 2,500 U.S. Marines are deployed to an Australian base at Darwin.

The facility, which is subject to congressional approval, could help U.S. Marines operate more readily in the Indo-Pacific region, according to a report by ABC News.

U.S. Marines train in Australia each year on a rotational basis, with most of them currently deployed at an Australian army base in Darwin.

The planned U.S. naval facility – located in the Glyde Point area, roughly 40km north-east of Darwin’s existing port – would be a commercial development rather than a military base.
