This week features the Bastille prison in Paris, the FIFA World Cup Final in Moscow, women aviators, the jazz singer Billie Holiday, the naming of Australia, the European Parliament in Strasbourg, and Neil Armstrong - the first man to walk on the moon.

July 14, 1789: Citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille prison, a hated symbol of the monarchy, at the start of the French Revolution. Bastille Day is now a public holiday in France

July 15, 2018: In one of the most exciting FIFA World Cup finals of the modern era, France defeated Croatia 4-2 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium to win the trophy for a second time

July 16, 1819: Madame Blanchard was the first woman to be killed in an aviation accident when fireworks ignited the gas in her balloon during an exhibition flight over Paris

July 17, 1959: Billie Holiday, one of the world’s most influential jazz singers, died after years of drug abuse. Her best known songs include God Bless the Child and Strange Fruit
