Forbes: World’s highest paid athletes

June 12, 2019 - American business magazine Forbes has released the World’s Top 100 highest paid athletes, with Barcelona star Lionel Messi topping the rankings. The Argentine forward earned $127m in salary and endorsements over the past 12 months, surpassing soccer rivals Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.

The Forbes Top 100 includes athletes from 25 countries and $4bn combined earnings -- which are up 5% from the previous year -- despite 2018 highest earner, boxer Floyd Mayweather, no longer featuring in the acclaimed list. Grand Slam tennis star, Serena Williams, is the only woman in the Top 100, earning $29.2m.
