United States crush Thailand 13-0 in Women’s World Cup

June 12, 2019 - The FIFA Women’s World Cup takes place in France, with 24 teams competing to be crowned World Champions. Reigning champions United States opened their World Cup campaign with a 13-0 demolition of Thailand, setting a new record for the biggest victory at the FIFA Women's World Cup.

The 2019 tournament marks the first showpiece since a remarkable rise in popularity in the women’s game, with increased participation numbers and steady growth of supporter bases.

Since the first Women’s World Cup in 1991, there have have been seven tournaments; the United States is aiming to lift the trophy for a record-extending fourth time in France after their triumph in 2015. Three other nations have been crowned World Champions: Germany (2003, 2007), Norway (1995) and Japan (2011).

A total of 52 matches will be played at 9 venues over four weeks, with the final taking place at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon on July 7.
