Trump threatens tariffs on Mexican goods

By Mike Tyler

June 6, 2019 - U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose import taxes on all goods from Mexico in an effort to persuade America’s southern neighbour to do more to stop illegal migration.

Straining to stave off the threatened tariffs, Mexican and American officials claimed progress in White House talks, but Trump said Thursday that a “lot of progress” must be made to halt the 5% taxes due to go into effect on June 10.

The U.S. imported $346.5 billion worth of goods from Mexico in 2018, according to government data, meaning a 5% tariff will cost more than $17 billion.
