How free would a UK-U.S. trade agreement be?

June 5, 2019 - The success of a potential UK post-Brexit free trade deal with the U.S. may be determined by Washington’s demands, as can be surmised from previous trade talks it has held with other would-be trade partners.

Donald Trump has promised the UK a “very, very substantial” post-Brexit trade deal with the United States, which Brexit supporters are keen to rapidly ratify – seeing it as a route to a prosperous “Global Britain” outside the European Union.

However, past experience of Washington’s dealings with other would-be trade partners hints at what it is likely to seek and the limits on what it would offer.
