How a new UK Conservative leader is elected

By Ninian Carter

June 7, 2019 - June 30, 2019 - The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Theresa May is to step-down as Conservative Party leader, triggering a contest that will elect a new prime minister.

The UK’s Theresa May will resign as Conservative Party leader on June 7, setting in motion a contest that will elect a new party leader and prime minister.

Her announcement, however, does not trigger a parliamentary election. Instead, the Tory party will elect the successor through several rounds of internal ballots.
