Hollywood’s love of sequels shows no sign of fading

By Ninian Carter

May 28, 2019 - Summer 2019 will see at least 14 Hollywood studio sequels hit U.S. cinemas — continuing a shift away from original films to follow-ups.

From 1982 to 1989, only a quarter of the top 10 U.S. summer movies were sequels, including “Crocodile Dundee II”, “Rocky III” and “Return of the Jedi”.

In the 1990s, only 16 of the top 100 summer movies were sequels, including
“The Lost World: Jurassic Park”, which hauled in a mighty $114.8m in its opening domestic weekend – more than any other summertime hit that decade.

The 2000s saw sequels gain traction, with 35% of that decade’s summertime hits being follow-ups to previous successes, including “Spider-Man 3” and “The Dark Knight”.

So far, summers in the 2010s have been saturated with more sequels than any previous decade, accounting for over half of the blockbusters hitting U.S. cinemas.
