July 7, 1999: Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj set a new world record for the mile of three minutes 43.13 seconds in Rome, Italy. The record still stands, 20 years on

July 8, 1889: John L. Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain in the last bareknuckle world heavyweight boxing match. He went on to become the first U.S. athlete to earn $1 million

July 9, 2018: A severe heatwave began in Japan. Prolonged temperatures of up to 40°C left at least 80 people dead and over 22,000 requiring hospitalisation

July 10, 2018: A cave rescue in Thailand successfully extracted 12 boys and their soccer coach, trapped for 17 days after heavy rains flooded narrow passages
