FA Cup Final 2019

By Chris Dinsdale

May 18, 2019 - The final of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest association football competition, will be contested this year by newly crowned Premier League champions Manchester City and Watford, who finished 11th in the table.

Manchester City have won the FA Cup on five previous occasions -- most recently with victory over Stoke City in 2011 -- and are making their 11th appearance in the final. The Citizens, who are competing for a domestic treble having earlier won the League Cup before wrapping up the Premier League title on the last day of the season, beat Rotherham convincingly in the third round and followed up with victories over Burnley, Newport County and Swansea City. A narrow semi-final win over Brighton and Hove Albion sealed their Wembey berth.

Watford are aiming to secure their first FA Cup silverware, having reached the final only once before, in 1984. The Hornets, captained by talismanic striker Troy Deeney, had a tough route to the final, having to overcome tricky Premier League opposition in the form of Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers to secure their spot at Wembley.
