European Rugby Champions Cup Final 2019

By Chris Dinsdale

May 11, 2019 - Ireland’s Leinster take on English rivals Saracens in the final of the Heineken Champions Cup, European rugby’s premier club competition. Leinster are the defending champions and are seeking a record fifth title in the competition while a win for Saracens, champions in 2016 and 2017, would take their trophy tally to three in four years.

The famed 52,000-capacity St James’ Park, better known as the home of Newcastle United Football Club, is hosting this year’s final.

The Heineken Champions Cup is the top-tier competition for clubs whose countries’ national teams compete in the northern hemisphere’s Six Nations Championship.

From 1995 to 2014 the competition was known as the Heineken Cup but the name was then changed to European Rugby Champions Cup following disagreements between its shareholders over the structure and governance of the competition. Heineken returned as sponsor for the 2018-19 season, running the competition alongside European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR). It is now known as the Heineken Champions Cup.
