Vladivostok University to host North Korea-Russia summit
April 25, 2019 - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will travel to Russia’s Far East for his first ever summit with President Vladimir Putin.
North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is set to visit Russia for a summit with President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, April 25.
The trip is part of Kim’s efforts to build foreign support for North Korea’s economic development, following the breakdown of a second U.S.-North Korea summit in February, which meant no relief from sanctions for his impoverished socialist state.
Russia is involved in efforts to persuade North Korea to retire its nuclear programme, and was involved in six party talks (with North and South Korea, Japan, the U.S. and China) last held in 2009.
The summit agenda will likely focus on Russia-North Korea relations, denuclearisation, and regional cooperation.
After the failed Vietnam summit with President Trump, Kim Jong Un is keen to show he is still a presence on the world stage, and that he has more options.
