Eastern Libyan forces to intensify Tripoli offensive

By Mike Tyler

April 23, 2019 - Eastern Libyan forces loyal to rebel warlord Khalifa Hifter are planning to intensify an assault on the capital Tripoli, seat of the country’s internationally-recognised government.

The Hifter-led Libyan National Army (LNA) force allied to a parallel government in the east launched an offensive to take Tripoli on April 4 but has been unable to breach the southern defences of the city.

Forces loyal to Tripoli’s UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) have driven back the LNA in recent days to the southern suburb of Ain Zara, the main scene of fighting, according to a Reuters report.
