Easter Day bombs kill hundreds in Sri Lanka

By Duncan Mil

April 22, 2019 - Sunday's coordinated suicide attacks on churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka killed 290 people, including 32 foreigners, and wounded more than 500 others.

The targets included St Anthony’s Shrine, Colombo; St. Sebastian’s, Negombo; Zion Church, Batticaloa; Kingsbury Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, and Cinnamon Grand in Colombo. There were two explosions during police raids in Colombo, and a pipe bomb was defused near Colombo’s main airport on Sunday night.

Foreigners killed include British citizens, and U.S., Turkish, Indian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch and Portuguese nationals

Around 7.6 per cent of mainly Buddhist Sri Lanka is Catholic, but the religion is seen as a unifying force because it includes both Tamil and majority Sinhalese ethnic groups.
