Indonesia votes in world’s biggest single-day election
April 17, 2019 - The world’s largest single-day elections will see 192 million voters electing the president, members of parliament and almost 20,000 other positions in regional councils across 18,000 islands.
In the presidential race, incumbent Joko Widodo, a former furniture salesman who ran on pro-poor platform in 2014, is standing for re-election against Prabowo Subianto, a former military general he defeated in 2014.
Regarding the legislative elections, more than 245,000 candidates will contest over 20,000 seats at five levels of government.
In just six hours, votes will be cast at 809,500 polling stations scattered across 1.9 million sq km of the world’s third largest democracy.
The millennial vote considered key to victory as around 40% of eligible voters, some 80 million people, are aged 17 to 35.
