The Mueller investigation

By Duncan Mil

March 25, 2019 - A summary of U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 22-month probe into Russia’s role in the 2016 U.S. election concludes that it did not find any evidence that Donald Trump or his associates broke the law.

No conspiracy: Mueller’s report states that the “investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”

No obstruction of Justice: Evidence is “not sufficient to establish that the president committed an obstruction-of-justice offence.” “While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”

The report highlighted two Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election. St Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) conducted disinformation and social media operations in the U.S. designed to sow social discord, with the aim of interfering with the election. Special Counsel brought criminal charges against 13 Russian nationals.

Russia’s military intelligence (GRU) successfully hacked into computers and obtained emails from persons affiliated with the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic Party organisations, and publicly disseminated material through intermediaries, including WikiLeaks. Special Counsel brought criminal charges against 12 GRU officers.
