Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race 2019

By Chris Dinsdale

April 7, 2019 - The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race returns for the 165th contest. Two-time Olympic champion James Cracknell, 46, has been selected to row for Cambridge, becoming the event’s oldest ever competitor. Cracknell retired from elite rowing in 2006 but qualifies for the Boat Race because he is studying for a Master of Philosophy degree in human evolution at Cambridge.

The Boat Race is one of the world’s oldest sporting events, first raced in 1829. Over 250,000 people watch the race from the river banks, and more than 15 million watch it on television.

International crews from England’s top two universities take to the River Thames in a gruelling four-mile rowing race between Putney and Mortlake.

Cambridge won the 2018 race by three lengths, and lead the overall series with 83 victories to Oxford’s 80.
