Democratic presidential candidates for 2020

By Jordi Bou

March 14, 2019 - Former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke has formally announced that he will seek the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, ending months of speculation about whether he would join the sprawling field of Democrats vying for the chance to run against President Donald Trump.

O'Rourke, 46, gained a national following with his long-shot election battle against U.S. Senator Ted Cruz last year.

A fluent Spanish speaker, the Texan politician with Irish roots broke Senate fundraising records by amassing more than $80 million over the course of his 2018 campaign.

O'Rourke is the 15th Democrat to declare his bid for the White House.

He joins a growing roster of people vying for the Democratic nomination, including senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and Senator from New Jersey Cory Booker.
