More than 11 million Syrians displaced by conflict

By Mike Tyler

March 15, 2019 - More than 5.6 million of Syria’s population are seeking refuge abroad, while another 5.7 million remain internally displaced from their homes, as the Syrian civil war enters its ninth year.

In total, some 11.3 million Syrian people are in need of aid – more than half of the pre-conflict population of 22 million.

Turkey hosts the largest number of registered Syrian refugees – currently 3.6 million.

The vast majority of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries are believed to live in urban areas, with only seven per cent accommodated in refugee camps, according to UNHCR.

Of Syria’s 5.6 million registered refugees, more than 2.5 million are children.
