Showdown at border over Venezuela aid

By Jordi Bou

February 23, 2019 - U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Venezuela’s military to abandon President Nicolás Maduro and support self-declared interim leader Juan Guaidó in delivering aid to thousands of Venezuelans.

The Trump administration and Venezuelan opposition have set Saturday as their deadline to break President Maduro’s blockade of the Colombian border, where the U.S. has delivered humanitarian supplies

Guaido says he will try to run caravans of aid across the border from Colombia. Maduro denies a humanitarian crisis exists, blaming the Trump administration for mounting a coup against him.

More than 2 million Venezuelans have fled the country in the last two years, most flooding across the border into Colombia, Brazil and Peru. Those left behind struggle to afford scarce supplies of food and medicine as inflation soars.
