Apple iPhone sales fall a fifth in China

By Ninian Carter

February 12, 2019 - Apple’s 2018 iPhone sales in China fell by a fifth compared with 2017, while sales of Chinese rival Huawei’s smartphones soared 23 percent, according to IDC.

Since encountering iPhone sales problems, Apple no longer breaks out detailed numbers on its smartphone shipments in its quarterly results, so this report is the clearest indicator we have on the issues Apple is facing in the Chinese market.

Overall, Apple’s smartphone shipments fell 19.9% in the final quarter of 2018, reducing its market share to 11.5%, compared to Huawei, which enjoyed growth to snatch 29% of its domestic market.
