February 17, 1869: Dmitri Mendeleev, by writing the chief properties of chemical elements on cards and arranging them in various ways, formulated the Periodic Table
February 18, 1994: Phoolan Devi, India’s “Bandit Queen”, was released from jail after serving 11 years. She then went into politics but was shot dead in 2001
February 19, 1878: Thomas Edison patented the phonograph, in which a large horn transmitted vibrations to a needle that scribed a recording on to a cylinder rotated by hand
February 20, 2014: More than 100 people were killed as protesters attempted to reclaim Independence Square from riot police in the heart of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev
February 21, 2018: U.S. evangelist Billy Graham Jr., influential preacher who was the first to use the medium of TV to convey the Christian message to worshippers, died at age 99
February 22, 1879: Frank Winfield Woolworth opened his first Five-and-Ten-Cent store n Utica, New York, pioneering sales and customer service practices still in use today
February 23, 1874: Major Walter Winfield patented an outdoor game he called “sphairistike”, Greek for “playing ball”, but which soon became known as lawn tennis
