Renault boss Ghosn bows out

By Duncan Mil

January 24, 2019 - Carlos Ghosn has resigned as chairman and chief executive officer of Renault after being held in a Tokyo prison accused of financial misdeeds at partner Nissan Motor Co. Ghosn has denied any wrongdoing.

Before his arrest in Tokyo in November 2018, on charges of understating his salary at Nissan by five billion yen (€40 million, $44 million) from 2011 to 2015, Ghosn ruled an automotive powerhouse. The Renault- Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors Corp alliance sold 10.6 million vehicles in 2017 -- one in nine passenger cars and light commercial vehicles sold worldwide.

French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire announced Ghosn’s removal at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday night. The French government owns a 15 per cent stake in the company, with extra voting rights and two seats on the board.

Michelin CEO Jean-Dominique Senard is expected to be named chairman.
