Osaka and Kvitova battle for Melbourne title

By Chris Dinsdale

January 26, 2019 - Naomi Osaka of Japan and Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic contest the women’s singles final at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Naomi Osaka, the first Japanese woman to reach the Australian Open final, is aiming for her second straight Grand Slam trophy after winning the U.S. Open in September.

Double Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is appearing in her first Grand Slam final since suffering a potentially career-ending injury in 2016, when an intruder broke into her home and stabbed her in the hand.

The final is the first meeting between the pair, who will become the top two players in the world from next week, ending Simona Halep’s 48-week reign at the head of the rankings.
