Asian Cup 2019 semi-final, Jan 29

By Chris Dinsdale

January 29, 2019 - The AFC Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates enters the semi-final stage, in which the remaining four teams compete to be crowned continental champions.

Following the first semi-final between Iran and Japan, the second contest features host nation United Arab Emirates against Qatar, at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, with both teams aiming to lift the Asian Cup for the first time.

Qatar, in their best ever performance at the Asian Cup, defeated Iraq in the Last 16 and dispatched competition favourites South Korea in the quarter-finals. Tournament top goalscorer Almoez Ali has netted seven of their 12 goals to date.

The UAE are aiming to reach their first final since 1996, where they suffered a penalty shoot-out heartbreak to Saudi Arabia. After a slow start, with two draws in the group stages, a close-fought victory over Australia in the quarter-final kept their title ambitions on home soil alive.

The final will be held at the Zayed Sports City Stadium, in Abu Dhabi, on February 1, 2019.
