Thailand braces for tropical storm Pabuk

By Mike Tyler

January 4, 2019 - The Kingdom of Thailand has cancelled flights and evacuated offshore oil rigs as tropical storm Pabuk threatens to batter the south of the country.

Rain, winds and surging seawaters struck southern Thailand as strengthening tropical storm Pabuk – the first of its type to strike the Kingdom in nearly 30 years – hammered towards coastal villages and tourist resorts.

The storm made landfall in the Nakhon Si Thammarat province at 0545 GMT, Friday, January 4, as officials drove trucks fitted with loudspeakers through flooded streets, urging residents to evacuate.

Pabuk is forecast to travel across southern Thailand towards Surat Thani, home to the popular tourist islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, before crossing over to the Andaman Sea and up towards the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
