Halep heads Australian Open women’s seeds
January 14-27, 2019 -- The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, takes place in Melbourne.
This year’s Australian Open women’s seeds are headed by the four reigning Grand Slam champions, Simona Halep (Roland Garros), Angelique Kerber (Wimbledon), Caroline Wozniacki (Australian Open), and Naomi Osaka (U.S. Open).
Serena Williams returns after sitting out last year’s tournament following the birth of her daughter. She last played in Melbourne in 2017, when she won the title while eight weeks pregnant. Seeded 16th, she will make another attempt to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam trophy.
