This week features the formation of the USSR, the breathalyser test for alcohol, the launch of the euro, the Luna I space shot, Bitcoins, the suspension of the Shanghai Composite Index,the first reference to a hamburger in print.

December 30, 1922: The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was established through the confederation of Russia, Byelorussia, Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Federation

December 31, 1938: The “Drunkometer”, the first successful machine to test blood alcohol content in car drivers by analysing their breath, was introduced in the United States

January 1, 1999: The introduction of the euro meant that nearly 300 million Europeans in 12 nations woke up to a shared currency for the first time since the Roman Empire

January 2, 1959: The Soviet Union launched the unmanned Luna I, the first lunar space shot, which passed within 5,900km of the moon before moving on to orbit the sun

January 3, 2009: Bitcoin came into existence after Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first ever block in the chain of the decentralized payment system. It was known as the Genesis block

January 4, 2016: Trading on China’s $7.1 trillion Shanghai Composite index was suspended after it fell by 7%, triggering a new circuit breaker system created to curb volatility

January 5, 1889: The word “hamburger” was first used in print in a U.S. newspaper. It was derived from a form of pounded beef introduced by German immigrants
