Macron’s popularity plunges amid “yellow vest” protests

By Mike Tyler

December 7, 2018 - French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Édouard Philippe’s approval ratings have hit new lows as “yellow vest” activists prepare for further anti-government demonstrations across France.

The president and French authorities are bracing for more protests this weekend, with tens of thousands of police officers mobilised and landmarks closed, including the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre.

The yellow vest protests, which began in mid-November over planned fuel tax hikes, have grown into a broad rebellion against the government. Key protester demands include a return of the wealth tax, better public services in rural areas, higher pensions and a reversal of education reforms.

The government’s subsequent retreat on fuel taxes appears to have done little to stem the discontent.
