Sino-Russian widebody aircraft takes on Airbus and Boeing

By Jordi Bou

November 6, 2018 - China and Russia have unveiled a life-size model of a wide-body long haul jet at China’s largest airshow, giving public shape to their joint efforts to break into a market dominated by Boeing and Airbus.

The CR929 plane is being developed by China-Russia Commercial Aircraft International Corporation (CRAIC), a joint venture between Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) and Russia's United Aircraft Corp (UAC).

The fuselage will be 63.8m long and 5.92m wide, and the wing span will be of 63.9m. It will have a passenger capacity of 280 seats in a three-class configuration, with a range of 12,000km.

These measurements put the aircraft roughly in-line with the Airbus A330-300, which is widely popular in China. The jet also represents a competitive response to the A350-900 and the Boeing 787-9 and -10.

CRAIC aims to take 10% of the wide-body market. Boeing forecast airlines worldwide would need 9,100 wide-body planes from 2016 to 2035, with a wave of replacement demand around 2021-2028.
