Lion Air jet’s black box found

By Mike Tyler

November 1, 2018 - Indonesian navy divers have recovered one of the two black boxes from the downed Lion Air jet, a crucial development in the investigation into what caused the aircraft to plunge into the Java Sea.

Lion Air Flight JT610 with 189 people on board crashed early Monday just minutes after takeoff from the Indonesian capital Jakarta. It was the worst airline disaster in Indonesia in more than two decades and renewed concerns about safety in its fast-growing aviation industry, which was recently removed from European Union and U.S. blacklists.

The device recovered by divers is the flight data recorder and the search for the cockpit voice recorder continues, said Bambang Irawan, an investigator with the National Transport Safety Commission.

The location of the find was about 500 metres northwest of the coordinates where the plane lost contact with air traffic control, and at a depth of 30 metres.

Investigators hope the recovery of the black boxes will shed light on why the aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 that was just two months old, crashed in fine weather with experienced pilots.
