This week features President Obama, Viking ruins in Newfoundland, the Kariba High Dam in Zambezi, Saudi Arabia’s blockade of Yemen, the Louvre in France, Kristallnacht in Nazi Germany and dust storms in South Dakota.

November 4, 2008: Barack Obama became the first African-American to be elected President of the United States, winning a decisive victory over John McCain

November 5, 1963: Viking ruins discovered in Newfoundland indicated that Leif Erikson reached North America around the year 1000, predating Columbus by 500 years

November 6, 1956: Construction of the Kariba High Dam began on the Zambesi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It forms Lake Kariba, the world’s largest man-made lake by volume

November 7, 2017: Saudi Arabia intensified its blockade of Yemen, closing all air and seaports, and land crossings. The UN said it prevented delivery of humanitarian aid

November 8, 1793: The revolutionary government in France formally opened the royal art collection in the Louvre to the public. The Louvre is now the world’s largest art museum

November 9, 1938: Anti-Jewish riots took place throughout Nazi Germany. Jewish owned shops were attacked, and it became known as Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass)

November 10, 1933: The “Black Blizzard” began in South Dakota, sweeping clouds of suffocating topsoil across the country and creating a storm of dirt, heralding the Dust Bowl era
