WWI CENTENARY

WWI centenary timeline

By Ben Mullins

November 11, 2018 - The First World War ended after four years that changed the course of world history. Triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo in 1914, the conflict that began in Europe spread to encompass much of the globe until the guns eventually fell silent on November 11, 1918.

In 1914, European nations were linked by a series of diplomatic alliances:Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire form the Central Powers. Britain, France and Russia make up the Triple Entente or Allies.

Italy, seeking to gain Austrian territory, enters the war on the side of the Allies in May 1915.

Bulgaria, with territorial ambitions in Serbia, aligns with the Central Powers in October 1915.
