Copa Libertadores semi-finals, 1st leg

By Chris Dinsdale

October 23, 2018 - October 24, 2018 - The Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition, reaches the semi-final stage with first leg matches taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores feature two heavyweight contests between perennial rivals Argentina and Brazil, as River Plate take on Gremio, and Boca Juniors clash with Palmeiras.

Reigning champions Gremio are bidding to win a fourth title following their victory over Argentina’s Lanus in the 2017 final, while six-time winners River Plate are targeting one more title to equal the all-time record held by Independiente.

Boca Juniors and Palmeiras met in the group stages, drawing in Sao Paulo, before the Brazilians inflicted Boca’s only defeat of the competition with a 3-0 victory in Buenos Aires.

Argentina (24) and Brazil (18) have won 42 of 58 Copa Libertadores titles collectively.
