Simple guide to midterm elections

By Jordi Bou

November 6, 2018 - Americans head to the polls to decide which party controls the two chambers of Congress and has the power to oversee President Donald Trump and his administration.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election. If the Democrats want to take control of the House, they will have to win at least 23 seats from the Republicans.

For the Senate, just 35 out of the 100 seats are being contested. The Democrats need two seats to take control.

However, while Democrats may be able to take the House, clinching the Senate will be much harder. With only nine seats to defend, the Republicans have big advantage over the Democrats because the Democratic party is defending 26 seats (including two independents, who usually vote with them) while the Republicans only have to defend nine.

The stakes for President Donald Trump are extremely high since a Democratic victory in either chamber would give the party the power to open investigations into various aspects of his administration.
