Super typhoon could impact 40 million

By Jordi Bou

September 12, 2018 - A super typhoon packing winds of up to 150 miles per hour is heading toward the Philippines, picking up speed over the Pacific on a route that also has Taiwan and the heavily populated southeastern coast of China in its sights.

Mangkhut is classified by the Hong Kong Observatory as a super typhoon, which have maximum sustained winds of over 240km per hour. In 2003, Super Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,300 people.

Mangkhut is expected to hit the farming areas of the northern Philippines by Saturday, according to the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center. It will strike southern Taiwan and Hong Kong over the weekend.

The storm may affect Asian businesses if it damages vital supply chains and infrastructure.
