Swedish election: Far-right party makes gains

September 10, 2018 - Sweden became the latest European country to shift to the right as the ruling Red-Green alliance took 40.6% of the vote or 144 seats in the 349-seat parliament, and the opposition centre-right coalition won 40.3% and 142 seats. The anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats party won 17.6 per cent and 63 seats.

Even though the two main blocs have pledged not to work with the Sweden Democrats, its increased support has fuelled fears of the rise of a far-right party with roots in the neo-Nazi movement.

In 2015, Sweden, a country of 10.1 million people, took in more than 160,000 asylum-seekers.

At a rally after the polls had closed, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said he would remain in office in the coming weeks and called for cooperation across the political divide.
