Rising death toll in eastern Ukraine

By Mike Tyler

September 10, 2018 - The conflict in eastern Ukraine between Russian-backed separatists and Kiev has claimed more than 10,000 lives since 2014, almost one-third of them civilians, making it the bloodiest in Europe since the Balkans in the 1990s.

Bound by the terms of the 2015 Minsk ceasefire agreements, both sides are barred from using air strikes, tanks and heavy weaponry. This has created the conditions for an attritional land war which marks a throwback to another age, where soldiers fight in trenches with shells, grenades and sniper fire, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The UN Human Rights agency says 25,000 people have been injured in the conflict, including up to 9,000 civilians, and an estimated 1.6 million are internally displaced.
