U.S. Open celebrates 50th anniversary

By Mike Tyler

August 27, 2018 - September 9, 2018 - The 2018 U.S. Open celebrates 50 years of tennis in the Open era with the completion of a $550 million transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.

The five-year project, which revamped more than 90 percent of the venue, included the installation of a retractable roof over the main Arthur Ashe Stadium, the construction of a new 14,000-seat Louis Armstrong Stadium (also with a retractable roof), a new Grandstand arena and practice courts, as well as 10 completely rebuilt southern field courts.

In honour of the 50th anniversary, the USTA is also introducing a new logo, which is a modernised version of the event’s iconic flaming tennis ball identity.
