July 15-21, 2018 -- Graphics show birthdays and anniversaries for each day of the week. This week features Marilyn Munroe and Jane Russel, Russia’s last Tsar, Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, Nelson Mandela, the first ever Tour de France, the Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa and the former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.

July 15, 1953: The lavish musical comedy film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes opened, featuring two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell

July 16, 1918: Russia’s last Tsar, Nicholas II, was murdered by the Bolsheviks. His wife Alexandra, their five children and several of their staff also died in the hail of bullets

July 17, 2014: Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crashed in war-torn eastern Ukraine, likely shot down by a Russian surface-to-air missile. All 298 people on board died

July 18, 1918: Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, was born. Jailed for 27 years for his anti-apartheid activities, he was elected president in 1994

July 19, 1903: Maurice Garin won the first ever Tour de France cycle race. Sixty riders competed in six stages over 2,428km. Garin won again in 1904 but was disqualified for cheating

July 20, 1923: Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa was assassinated. Two bodyguards, his driver and his secretary also died in the hail of gunfire on his car

July 21, 2008: Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, one of the world’s most wanted men, was arrested in Serbia after 12 years on the run
