Pro-business Duque wins Colombian election
June 18, 2018 -- Conservative Ivan Duque has won Colombia’s presidential runoff pledging to change a landmark peace accord with FARC rebels which ended decades of conflict in the South American state.
Duque, 41, is the candidate for the Democratic Center Party, a movement started in 2013 by hardline former President Alvaro Uribe.
After working at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington until 2014, Uribe asked Duque to return to Colombia and take a seat in Congress. Marta Lucia Ramirez, Duque’s running mate, will become Colombia’s first female vice president when they take office in August.
