Approval of Trump-Kim talks

Graphic News

June 12, 2018 -- Seven-in-ten Americans say they support direct talks between the U.S. and North Korea over its nuclear programme, but most doubt that they will be meaningful, according to a Pew Research Center survey.

Following Tuesday’s unprecedented meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, both sides pledged to work toward the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and to begin high-level negotiations.

However, the summit produced few specific new commitments from Pyongyang to surrender its nuclear weapons, pushing any details on timing and verification of disarmament to future negotiations.

A document signed by Trump and Kim provided little on how to make the denuclearisation process “complete, verifiable and irreversible” -- long-stated U.S. goals.
