America takes on the world

Graphic News

June 8, 2018 -- The Trump administration’s decisions to exit the Iran nuclear deal, to quit the Paris accord on climate change and slam tariffs on allies are the latest examples of America’s unilateralism.

The Group of Seven summit ended in acrimony Saturday, with U.S. President Donald Trump lashing out at host Canada and retracting his endorsement of the joint statement.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described Trump’s tariffs on G7 allies -- justified on national security grounds -- as “insulting and unacceptable.”

Tweeting en route to his next summit in Singapore with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un, Trump said he had instructed U.S. officials “not to endorse the communique as we look at Tariffs (sic) on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market! (sic)”

He accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of acting “meek and mild” during meetings, only to attack the U.S. at a news conference.

Trump controversially suggested that the G7 offer a seat at the table to Russia, saying “something happened a while ago where Russia is no longer in. I think it would be an asset to have Russia back in.”

Russia was expelled from what was then the G8 after it invaded and annexed Crimea.

The annual G7 summit includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany, the U.S. and Japan.
