Guatemala's Fuego volcano eruption kills dozens

By Duncan Mil

June 4, 2018 - At least 25 people were killed and nearly 300 injured when Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted, spewing an 8-kilometre stream of molten lava shortly before noon on Sunday.

Rescuers have struggled to reach rural residents cut off by the eruption, the Associated Press reports. Authorities have been unable to account for an undetermined number of people and say they fear the death toll could rise.

The Volcan de Fuego, or “volcano of fire,” exploded in a hail of ash and molten rock, blanketing nearby villages in heavy ash. It then began sending lava flows down the mountain’s flank and across homes and roads.

The eruption forced Guatemala City’s La Aurora international airport to shut down its main runway due to the presence of volcanic ash.
