Trump plans go ahead with steel, aluminum tariffs on EU

May 31, 2018 -- The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from its top allies and trading partners -- the European Union, Mexico and Canada. All vowed to retaliate by penalising U.S. products.

European officials had braced for the tariffs, and the EU has threatened to retaliate against U.S. orange juice, peanut butter, Kentucky bourbon (think Jack Daniels and Southern Comfort), blue jeans (Levis), motorcycles (Harley Davidsons) and other goods in return.

Canada is considering tariffs on steel, yoghurt and toilet paper, while Mexico is considering reacting by penalising imports of pork, apples, grapes, cheeses and metal products.

President Trump had initially imposed the tariffs in March, saying a reliance on imported metals threatened national security. But he exempted Canada, Mexico and the EU to buy time for negotiations -- a reprieve that expired at midnight (04:00GMT) on Thursday.
