Former North Korea spy chief heads to Washington for talks

By Jordi Bou

May 30, 2018 - Former North Korea spy chief Kim Yong Chol arrives to New York for talks on an upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

General Kim, 72, is a controversial figure in neighbouring South Korea, and previously served as a negotiator in inter-Korean talks.

He is believed to have masterminded numerous attacks on South Korea, including the sinking of the Cheonan military vessel in 2010, which killed 46 sailors.

Kim Yong Chol has been closely involved with talks with South Korea as well and his visit to the United States would further indicate preparations for the historic summit are moving ahead.
