June 24, 2015: Scientists announced they had found the oldest-known turtle, 240 million years old, that combined traits of lizard-like ancestors with emerging turtle-like features

June 25, 1950: North Korea invaded South Korea, crossing the 38th parallel behind a firestorm of artillery. A UN ceasefire call was ignored and the Korean War began

June 26, 1948: The Berlin Airlift began after the Soviets imposed a blockade on West Berlin. Over the next year the Western allies flew in over 8,000 tonnes of food and fuel a day

June 27, 1985: America’s iconic Route 66, which stretched some 2,200 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, was decertified and all its highway signs were removed

June 28, 1940: Soccer legend Pele, Brazil’s top goalscorer who led his nation to three World Cup victories in 1958, 1962 and 1970, was born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento

June 29, 2003: Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn, who won a record four Best Actress Oscars during a glittering six-decade career, died at the age of 96

June 30, 2010: Rio de Janeiro’s iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer was unveiled after a $4 million restoration. The 38-metre statue attracts two million tourists a year
